Watch your steps

As our living room floors are partly rotten we have to find light but sizeable things to put to the places we don't whish our gests to step on (it is no use warning them - usually they already stand on the spot when we notice and find our voice to say something - better to cover the area with stuff so that there is no room to stand). The old sewing basket is a perfect tool for this use: it is very light but takes enough room and nobody is going to try sitting on it.

By the way, the floor almost caved at this spot when we moved the furniture and my husband had to stand on the rotten boards.

Guess how much it weighs

I told you yesterday about our new book cabinet...my granpa's cupboard had to be moved to make room for the new one. Granpa's cupboard is now between our living room's two windows and I think this is a better place for it than the previous one. Before, the light from the windows shone straight to the doors that are a bit damaged. Now the cupboard is mostly in shade and looks better for it. And next week we'll get new curtains to divide the room and I think the cupboard will look even better then as the curtains are 40's style and the cupboard is from that era (I think).

After and before

I'll rather start with the after picture as the before is too depressing...we bought a "new" book cabinet yesterday and to be able to put it in the place where the floor can take the weight of books and the heavy cabinet, we had to move a lot of stuff to other places (including pictures hanging on the wall).

I am really happy with the new cabinet, it is just what I was looking for (even if I did not know what I was looking for before finding this one).

Here are some "before" pictures.Don't you just love buying new furniture..

And before you ask, no, all my books didn't fit in the cabinet.

Hard decisions

I love to cook and usually try 3 to 7 new recipies each week. But as I read every food magazine there is and buy and borrow loads of cook books I am forever behind with trying out new dishes. I can't imagine how many more recipies there would be to try if we ate more meat. As it is now, I still gather a lot of meat recipies, I just change the meat to salmon or chicken.

Heavy weights

It seems that the beginning of the year is a good time to find vintage weights..these Konesilta ones we found last weekend. We already have a Konesilta shop scale but it missed the weights. Now we have a complete set! The wooden tray needs a bit of polishing but otherwise the set is in good condition.

Hay, hay, hay!

Sorry Fiskars, my new kitchen scissors are from danish Hay. Fiskars scissors are of good quality but they are so ugly you have to hide them in a drawer and I want to have the scissors were I can easily use them.

In mint condition

I have raved about the matt Jeanne D'arc Living paints before and here comes more praise. Our kitchen pendant was of a boring silver-grey colour and after just a few minutes it got a fifties style minty green colour. It is handy to have a husband with a steady hand as he can paint almost anything perfectly. I would have ruined the lamp, I am sure of it.

Not only stars

I just said to my brother that I am interested only in brass pots and pans with stars on them. And right after saying that, my husband found this adorable horse pan. Love it and want more...so dear brother, be on the lookout for these, too!

Neat!

Our new furniture is a real miracle worker. My husband loves it as he has all his tools within easy reach and I love the stool as I don't anymore find tools anywhere I look.

Buy one if you find one, I quarantee great happiness all around :)

Trapped (or not)

The old herring tin gets to sit in a fish trap...or so it thinks...in reality the trap is a wire cage meant for herbs to protect them from predators.

Who cares

I think this little brass lady does the gallic shrug perfectly. To me it seems that she is eternally answering the question with a shrug that says "I don't know and couldn't care less and anyway it is not my fault". I think this is a perfect attitude for a lady decorating an ashtray.

The secret of flourishing house plants

I only have green fingers outside of the house, or so I thought before buying Vårkulla. This fake olive tree was what I started with (and it still looks good if I just remember to dust it every now and then). But then I found out that the secret of keeping house plants alive and well is as follows: no water, very little light and just a touch of warmth for five days a week. At home I have no hope of keeping any flowers alive but at Vårkulla they flourish so this must be true.

Well oiled

I used to use only olive oil when cooking but now I use other oils, too. My new favourite is sesame oil, it has a bit of a burned taste that goes really well with wok dishes. Avocado oil is great for Mexican food and truffel oil goes well with anything, really. Just remember to use it as a spice, a little goes a long way.

I keep my oil bottles in an old measure. This way I don't need to worry about oil marks on the table.

Toolbox for a woman to love

All it took was some idle searching at tori.fi and I found it. A perfect furniture to hide my husband's tools in. The seller was kind enough to drop the stool at my husband's workplace so we didn't need to do anything but pay for it. Easy does it!

I'll show you more pictures when my husband has gathered his tools from all-over-the-place and put them where they should be.
