I don't have time

Life is too short to eat from ugly tableware!

At home:
Black and white Taika by Klaus Haapaniemi for Iittala

At Vårkulla:
Korento by Klaus Haapaniemi for Iittala

At the cottage:
Black and white Paratiisi by Birger Kaipiainen for Iittala

I am still trying to find the perfect glassware and cutlery, which is not as easy as finding tableware. For glasses we have green Ote glasses, Gaissa by Sarpaneva and Taika by Haapaniemi (all by Iittala). In addition we have French crystal glasses, Stockmann Villa wine glasses, Ikea wine glasses, old glasses bought from flea markets, cheap brandy glasses from super market etc. I would love to have only Finnish glasses but I want to have wine glasses that can be washed in the dish washer and the only one's by Iittala I like are too big for our small washer. And to be hones, I don't much like the ones I claim to like...I like the French glasses, old glasses from the 40's and Villa Stockman glasses much more..

For cutlery we have Hackman's Carelia at home (which I love as the serie is very large - everything from small spoons to cake servers), Hackman's Memory at Vårkulla and then a Spanish design cutlery at the cottage (don't remember the name, the only thing I remember is that the forks are useless when eating new boiled potatoes..).

Memory would have been a perfect choice also for home as for cottage as I love the old fashioned design but Hackman discontinued the production and I didn't manage to buy the whole serie even for Vårkulla before the prodcut vanished from the stores. In addition the line didn't have scoops and other serving cutlery, so it is would have not been so perfect after all. Well, the search continues...

Can't wait

I hate buying things from web shops as you have to wait before getting the stuff. Even a few days seems like a long time. We ordered this wool/silk rug from Ellos (www.ellos.fi) and I want to have it now, not tomorrow!

The floors in Vårkulla's living room are a bit cold during the winter and that is why we need a lot of rugs. We even pile up the rugs - the more the warmer.

Empty cups

The fifties style rules again! The two cups at the back are from Stockholm and the round one in front is from Finland. The Finnish one was hand painted by some hobby artist, the others are by ceramic factories. I don't know what these were used for in the fifties, ashtrays maybe? Or then they were only for decoration as they are now. I am always on the lookout for these small cups - if you see some, let me know!

Jailbird

This pole is supposed to be a candle holder but it has always seemed like a fire hazard so we put a bird in it and use it as decoration.

No tea for me, please

I am a coffee lover through and through, tea is for sissies! I read that if you drink about 4 to 5 cups of coffee daily you just might miss alzheimer's. Good news, let's drink (coffee) to that.

Pots and rugs

There is a new interior decoration shop White in Loviisa (link to a Facebook page: White). As you might have guessed, they sell a lot of white stuff with a touch of grey and black. Even if I have recently bought mostly colourful stuff for Vårkulla, I still love anything white, too. These pots and the rug are from White. The rug is for the bathroom and the pots for the living room where they hide an ugly plastic damp remover. The pots are really heavy and so they suit to be placed on the floor.

Lilies from Lidl

Lidl is a great place to buy cheap flowers - in pots and cut ones. These lilies are more than a week old and they are still doing great. My brother's forties´ vase and the old radio look good with the pink lilies, don't they?

The great adventures of a golden squirrel

I haven't written a book yet, but I just might as this golden squirrel inspires me! We found the squirrel in Stockholm in a wonderful shop Oscar & Clothilde (link: oscar&clothilde).

Sorry mice, no dice!

I have usually hung a couple of round crisp breads from the kitchen curtain pole for Christmas. My husband found three small copper molds from our flea market and they found their place at the kitchen window. I think I'll just change the ribbons to red ones for Christmas and the mice have to do without the bread.

Don't even start!

Don't you go and buy a record player (or a radio). It never stops with one! This is our newest baby from early sixties.

What a difference a little paint makes

We bought a small tin of totally matte paint by Jeanne d'Arc Living and transformed an old and a bit broken lamp holder with it. The one on the left is the one we painted in case you were wondering.

The lamp only needed to be painted once to get a perfect finnish. There are a lot of different colours available and now I am planning to change the colour of our boring gray ceiling lamp.

Jewels of autumn

Wonderful colours yesterday! The sun shone and the newly fallen leaves were a bit wet from a light morning rain. Lovely.

A poor painter

I promised my husband I won't buy paintings if the canvas shines through the paint. Never say never...I bought this one as I fell for the colours.

Delicate things

As you might have noticed, I have a weakness for anything from the fifties. I was delighted to find these two at our local flea market.

If I ate a lot of fruits, these would be perfect holders for them. But as I prefere chocolate, I had to buy big enough candies so they don't drop between the strings...

Play it again Sam

As I have already told you, we have lots of old singles (thanks bro´). Now we try to find boxes for them. Here are two examples.

In grandma's living room

I bought new curtains from Indiska for the living room. I hope the ghosts of the house like the change.

The most beautiful bathroom, ever!

I just have to link this to you: Made in Persbo

This is the most beautiful bathroom I have ever seen. The mirrors, cabinets, floor - everything is perfect. If I had more room..

Pin ups

As we haven't yet redecorated the living room, I pin everything up on the walls. It doesn't matter if the pins leave marks as we are going to change the wallpapers anyway. Did you think we'll keep the green one? It is not quite as impossible a thought as it would have been a couple of years ago. Then I would have chosen white walls but now I think plain green is not enough, I want pattern on the walls. For now I'll have to do with decorations like these old Arabia wall plates. I got them from my cousin - I wouldn't have started collecting these myself but now that I got these six I seem to want more..

Roses are red

It seems that I have to buy everything turquoise I happen to see. The trey is from the sixties and it has some water damage around the edges but looks good enough to have a place in our living room.
